Looking Down on Snow

Ottawa over the past few days had around 8-10″ of new snow.  Here are a few shots looking down on the fields of white. Pentax *istD dSLR, with Tokina AT-X 60~120mm f:2.8 zoom lens.

Here we see ice fog from the Ottawa River creating a layered image fade out.

High Flight.

In tribute to the Late Cliff Robertson, who owned this Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX ( MK923).

“High Flight”

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air….

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I have trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

John Gillespie Magee, Jr. (9 June 1922 – 11 December 1941) RCAF, 412 Sqd. Died while flying a Spitfire.

Now some of my favourite aviation photos.

Clouds, a Photo Essay…

Photo essays don’t need words. All images were taken at the same location, within a one hour time frame.

Homage to Equivalents

Alfred Stieglitz (1864 – 1946), famous American photographer.
Stieglitz began a cycle of cloud photographs he called “Equivalents, from 1922-31 ” claiming that form conveyed emotional and psychological meaning in the visual arts, not the specific subject of the artist.

I have always liked clouds and the sky, so perhaps inspired by the great Alfred Stieglitz, are some clouds in a boiling sky.
Moments later they have changed…
In weather like this change is quick…
And almost as quick as they formed, they left.

Sky Fire

Late Fall and Winter in the vast frozen wasteland I call home, has many photo ops. There is the opportunity to photograph snow, and maybe snow ice, and maybe so more snow! But often winter means Sky Fire, or the Aurora borealis. We are in a bit of a peak in solar activity right now, and these solar flares cause solar winds that set the Van Allen belt into celestial fireworks.

Looking North

Here in a 30 second exposure @ f:4 with my SMC DA-Pentax 14mm f:2.8 we have an arc of the Aurora framing the Little Dipper.

Here with the same exposure, same lens we see Orion in the green and magenta sky.

Pentax *istD smc DA-Pentax 14mm f:2.8 lens, 30 seconds f:4

At times the display was so bright that we could see our camera controls, often as bright as the full moon on this moonless night.

The road north.

Here we can see the closed Gatineau Park Road at Cantley, Quebec which we used as our shooting platform. Larger versions can be seen on my website.
