Friday Night in Ottawa

On Friday January 12th, 2018 Two of Ottawa’s hottest bands warmed up a frosty Friday. Ottawa Life Magazine’s (OLM) reader poll awarded The PepTides as “Ottawa’s Best Band”, they were opened by OLM’s “Ottawa’s Best Musician” Malak Sound both give high energy sets.

“Malak filled the room with her incredible, multi-octave voice, accompanying herself on keyboard to a song that evoked the epic scope of Lady Gaga mixed with the artistic sensibility of Kate Bush. The emotion in her voice was spine-tingling.”
~Lynn Saxberg, Ottawa Citizen.

I Had photographed Malak last year, she had an incredible voice. This show was about a year after the first time I saw her, she has had amazing growth as an entertainer. Biggest change is her stage presence, she now owns the room.

Up next was the 9 member band The PepTides. They have a high energy very well polished show.

“The PepTides is a nine-member band with a distinctive larger-than-life pop sound. The five vocalists and four instrumentalists draw on funk, electronic and disco influences. In 2017, the band was featured on the cover of Ottawa Life Magazine as “Ottawas Best Band.”

A snapshot of Canadian diversity, The PepTides is an eclectic community of musicians with a rainbow of identities: girls and guys, gay and straight, English and French, black and white and in between, Ukrainian, Mexican, Guyanese, Cree, Acadian, Armenian and Scottish.

The group is noted for its extravagant live performances featuring thick vocal harmonies, theatrical choreography and colourful visuals. The PepTides’ songs juxtapose upbeat music with lyrics that comment on far-reaching themes like love, hate, revenge, sex, religion, war—and getting ready for dates.”
